Getting Started

1. Open Paperclip and sign in with Apple.
2. Pick a username and an emoji that captures your current vibe.
3. Share your invite code with friends, or enter theirs.
4. Your friends see your emoji update in near real time.

Common Questions

How do I add a friend?

Tap the invite icon and either share your invite code, or paste a friend's code. Once both sides connect, you'll see each other's emoji.

How do I report or block someone?

Open the friend's detail page (tap them in your feed). Scroll to the bottom and you'll see Report and Block. We review reports within 24 hours.

How do I delete my account?

Open the app, tap the gear icon to open Settings, scroll to the bottom, and tap Delete account. Your account, emoji history, friends, and all associated data are permanently removed immediately. No support contact required.

I'm not getting notifications.

• Check iOS Settings → Notifications → Paperclip and confirm they're allowed.
• Open the app and check Settings → Notifications to make sure Mute and Quiet Hours aren't blocking the alert.
• Notifications don't work in the iOS Simulator — only on a real device.

Nearby pairing isn't finding my friend.

• Both devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi.
• The OS will prompt for Local Network permission the first time you use it; you can change this in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network.
• If it still doesn't work, just trade invite codes manually — Nearby is an optional convenience.

Public profile

You can opt into a public profile in Settings. When enabled, your username and current emoji are accessible at a public URL. You can turn it off anytime; the URL stops resolving immediately.

Phone, Contacts and Auto Status

Do I have to give my phone number?

No. Tap Skip for now during setup. Your number only helps people who already have it find you. It's never shown to anyone. Want it removed? Email us, or delete your account.

What happens when I check my contacts?

Only phone numbers are checked against Paperclip accounts, then thrown away. Names stay on your phone. Each person is added one at a time, by you.

What is auto status?

If you turn it on, Paperclip suggests a status emoji from things you allow, like motion, Apple Health, your calendar's busy/free or what's playing. It reads them on your phone. Friends see only the emoji, marked "auto," and a one-word hint like "from your workout." It always asks before sharing. Turn it off any time in Settings → Auto status.

Age

Paperclip is for people 13 and up. Your emoji only reaches friends you've added, and your public profile is off unless you turn it on. If you think a child under 13 has an account, email us and we'll delete it.
